From a Dream to a Cornerstone: How the Mapt Transformation Challenge Propelled DBNO Forward
What began as a vision born from lived experience is now a thriving nonprofit with a physical space, structured programs, and a powerful community mission. Down But Not Out (DBNO), founded by Alphonso Bailey, was selected as Mapt’s 2025 Transformation Challenge winner for its unique approach to youth empowerment through boxing, mentorship, and character development.
Alphonso’s journey is the heart of the DBNO story. A star athlete growing up in Indianapolis, Alphonso’s future seemed bright. But after losing his father while in college, grief and instability led him down a path that ended in incarceration. In prison, he discovered boxing—and with it, discipline, healing, and hope. After his release, Alphonso rebuilt his life, rising to the top of the amateur boxing world and later turning pro. But it wasn’t until his story was captured in a documentary titled Down But Not Out that he saw the true power of sharing his journey.
That story, and the impact it had on young people, became the foundation for DBNO.
“Alphonso’s vision for DBNO is exactly what the Transformation Challenge was built to support,” said Brittany Krier, Co-Founder of Mapt. “We saw a compelling story, a credible leader, and an opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people. It wasn’t just about starting a nonprofit—it was about creating something that would last.”
The Transformation Challenge is more than a grant—it’s a deep, hands-on partnership designed to accelerate and amplify grassroots visions. For DBNO, that meant not only funding, but also a full suite of strategic supports from Mapt’s team: nonprofit infrastructure, program design, brand development, fundraising guidance, and strategic planning.
“With Mapt’s help, it’s like God saying, ‘Okay, now I’m going to make it even better,’” Alphonso shared. “They helped us take our dream and make it something strong, structured, and sustainable.”
